If you’re unfamiliar with the wines of California’s Livermore Valley, Murrieta’s Well might be a good place to start. This Livermore Valley producer sources grapes from about 100 acres of estate vineyards on a site that dates back to the 1880s. That’s when Louis Mel purchased the property and planted a vineyard based on cuttings from Chateau d’Yquem and Chateau Margaux.
His friend Ernest Wente purchased the vineyard in the 1930s, and it has been under the Wente family’s control ever since, though the Murietta’s Well brand was established in 1990.
These wines are sourced from estate vineyards, like Louis Mel Vineyard (which sits at about 575-715 feet in elevation) and the Hayes Vineyard, which rises to about 860 feet. The valley stretches east to west, which allows cooling fog and breeze from the San Francisco Bay to roll. Combine that with old riverbed soils (gravelly, clay), and winemaker Robbie Meyer has some high quality fruit to work with.
These wines make a good, refreshing argument for why this important and historic California wine region is still exciting today. I received these wines as samples and tasted them sighted.
2016 Murrieta's Well The Whip - California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley
SRP: $26
Light yellow color. Peaches, lychee, magnolia, fresh laundry and ginger on the nose, a really interesting combo. Pleasantly juicy with orange, lychee and pineapple fruit, a waxy feel but vibrant acidity. The fruit is accented with baby’s breath, white tea, raw almond, floral perfume. Chunky fruit but fresh throughout. A blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Orange Muscat and Viognier. Aged 14 months in a mix of barrels and stainless steel. (88 points)
2017 Murrieta's Well Dry Rosé - California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley
SRP: $30
Light watermelon color. Bright and floral with baby’s breath, cherry blossom, wild strawberries, juicy watermelon, a spicy green herbal note, too. Medium-bodied, plump texture but moderating acidity. Flavors of strawberry, white cherries, watermelon, apricot, with lots of white flowers, rose petals, honeyed tea and a spicy white pepper note. Complex, fresh. A blend of Grenache, Counoise and Mourvedre. (89 points)

SRP: $35
Vibrant purple color. Aromas of blackberries, currant paste, roasted fig, with vanilla coffee, roasted herbs, anise, clove, some sweet violets and root beer notes. Medium-bodied and plush on the palate with smooth tannins and vibrant acidity. Juicy and tangy fruit (black cherries, raspberries, juicy plums), the fruit has a nice crunch to it, and I get elements of spiced black tea, anise, cedar, espresso and mint. Yummy for sure, but shows freshness as well. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Aged two years in 40% new oak. (90 points)
2016 Murrieta's Well Merlot Small Lot - California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley
SRP: $46
Bright purple color. Nose shows rich but tart blackberries and black cherries with earthy, smoky notes, along with violets, coffee grounds and eucalyptus. Medium/full-bodied with fleshy tannins, the fruit (blackberry, dark plums, black cherries) is juicy but fresh acidity keeps it tangy. Notes of roasted coffee, tilled soil, violet petals, some vanilla and cedar woven in well. This is delicious, balanced, vibrant. I’m impressed. Includes 5% Cabernet, all the fruit comes from the Sachau Vineyard, gravelly, sandy loam. The wine is aged 18 months in 60% new French oak. (90 points)

Wine Reviews: New Releases from California
We’re back to the Golden State this week with a mix of newly-released wines from various producers.
Old school California powerhouse Wente lays out four Chardonnays that show an interesting diversity of styles. For several years, I’ve loved the bright and brisk Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs coming from Sonoma’s Alma Fria, and their 2015s are singing beautifully right now, and will continue to do so for years. Ehlers Estate’s Sauv Blanc and Chateau Montelena’s Zin deliver yet again, while a few other wines round out the report.
These wines were received as samples and tastes sighted.

Cali Reds for Summertime Grilling
This post first appeared on the daily wine blog Terroirist.
It’s the dog days of summer in the mid-Atlantic, and it’s been hot and humid for as long as I can remember. When I’m done pounding H20 all day long, I generally uncork bubbles or whites or pink wine.
That said, if you’re firing up a grill, red wines should probably be involved, no matter the weather conditions. I recently tasted through a wide array of California red wines that should pair nicely with summertime meals, parties and grill-outs. From Petite Sirah to Zin blends to Rhone reds, there are some goodies in this report, many of which are reasonably priced.
These wines were received as trade samples and tasted single-blind.
2014 Chronic Cellars Purple Paradise - California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
SRP: $15
Medium ruby color. Jammy aromas of currants, plums and blackberries along with cola and coffee. Full and juicy with fleshy tannins and low acidity. A bold presence with saucy blueberry and jammy blackberries, backed up by cola, vanilla (lots of it) and caramel. High deliciousness factor for those with a Paso Robles sweet tooth predilection. 77% Zinfandel, 14% Syrah, 8% Petite Sirah, 1% Grenache. (85 points)
2014 Chronic Cellars Petite Sirah Suite Petite - California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
SRP: $16
Deep purple color. Smells of rick blackberries, plum skins, blueberry concentrate, some roasted red pepper and vanilla as well. Full and chewy on the palate with some structure in the tannic grip, low acid makes this feel a bit heavy, but the flavors are delish: blackberry, blueberry, boysenberry jam. I also get some toasted coconut, mocha and crème brulee. Tasty stuff. Includes 15% Petite Sirah. (85 points)
2014 Chronic Cellars Sofa King Bueno - California, Central Coast, Paso RoblesSRP: $22
Vibrant purple color. Smells of roasted plums, blueberry and raspberry jam, along with sweet coffee and vanilla. Full-bodied and saucy with moderate tannic structure and low acidity. Dense plums, blackberries and blueberries, the fruit is jammy and rich and laced with smoke, black pepper glaze, milk chocolate, coffee. A bit candied and chewy in style but good amount of deliciousness. A blend of Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Mourvedre and Tannat. (85 points)
2012 Oso Libre Zinfandel Osezno - California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
SRP: $38
Medium ruby color. Smells like a spicy mix of pepper, clove and all spice on top of juicy plums and red cherry fruit with notes of maple and brown sugar. Full-bodied on the palate but not heavy, this has a waxy feel to it with fleshy tannins and medium acidity. A cool mix of black and red cherries with roasted figs and dates. Interesting blend of maple and roasted chestnut elements with spicy clove and nutmeg, and this makes for a fun spice rack of flavors. Stays clean, not too hot, with impressive balance and complexity. From the La Vista Vineyard in Adelaida, this Zin is aged 20 months in new Hungarian and old French oak. (90 points)
2012 Oso Libre Nativo - California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
SRP: $45
Light ruby color. More floral on the nose than the Osezno Zinfandel, with roses and violets on top of juicy raspberries, red apples, wild strawberry, topped in some sage and pepper. Full but so velvety and silky on the palate, smooth tannin frams the medium acidity. Red apple and juicy cherries mix with darker plum notes, while the fruit is juicy and vibrant it’s not jam jar in the slightest. I get complex waves of roasted chestnut, allspice, tar, rhubarb, rose hips. Full of flavor but so bright, refined, even, although this could develop with time in the cellar. 100% Primitivo (Italian clone of Zinfandel), this wine is aged 20 months in new Hungarian and old French oak. (91 points)
2013 Edmeades Winery Edmeades' Folly - California, Mendocino County
SRP: $26
Bright purple color. Aromas of black cherries, gushing blackberry, cassis — a dark, loamy, iron-rich note, like charcoal and tar mixed with dark coffee, toasted coconut and cedar shavings. A concentrated wine on the palate, with dusty tannic structure and medium-low acidity. Juicy black cherries and blueberries, covered in dark chocolate and some espresso. Sweet vanilla and charcoal, coffee and caramel sauce make this a bold a lush wine. Rich, saucy, bold, sure this is delicious but it’s also pretty complex and structured. A blend of Zinfandel with 23% Syrah, 15% Merlot and 15% Petite Sirah aged in 15% new American and French oak. (88 points)
2013 Edmeades Winery Petite Sirah - California, Mendocino County
SRP: $35
Purple pitch colored. Deep and saucy aromatics with dense blueberry and boysenberry jam, also some vanilla, milk chocolate, charcoal pit and espresso. Full-bodied and chewy on the palate, some grit to the tannins, medium-low acidity. Blackberry, blueberry jam, mixes with espresso, dark chocolate, graphite, vanilla and charred wood. A bold and extracted wine but it’s structured well and could stand up to a big-ass steak or a few years in the cellar, or both. Includes 7% Zinfandel, this spends 15% new French oak, and 85% used French and American oak. (88 points)
2013 Murrieta's Well The Spur - California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley
SRP: $30
Smells sweet and juicy, dark but floral, with black and red berry fruit laced with smoke, herbs, dark chocolate and red licorice. Dusty-light tannins on the palate, some moderate acidity, this is a medium-full-bodied wine with a chewy, fruit-driven structure. Black cherries and currants mix with blueberry jam, and the fruit is touched with chocolate shavings, sweet barbecue sauce and some leafy, spicy elements. Fun stuff for the price. A blend of Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. (86 points)
2013 Murphy-Goode Zinfandel Liar's Dice - California, Sonoma County
SRP: $21
Light purple color. Smells of sweet cherries, candied raspberries, strawberry jam – along with some cocoa powder, pepper and sweet cola. Full-bodied, some moderate acid, light tannins but a chewy mouthfeel. Flavors of sweet cherries, raspberries and red currant jam, the fruit is juicy and ripe but also shows a bit of tartness. Roasted chestnuts, sweet cola, cedar and coffee notes add some complexity. Fun stuff for early consumption; bring on the grilled food. Includes 4% Petite Sirah, this is aged 10 months in mostly American oak. (86 points)

Livermore Valley: Rich History, Rich Wines
This post first appeared on the daily wine blog Terroirist.
When studying the history of California Wine, Livermore Valley pops up again and again. From the opening of the region’s first winery in 1880s, to the Chardonnay pioneering of Wente Vineyards, to Concannon’s work with Cabernet clones and Petite Sirah promotion. California, as a whole, owes a whole lot to Livermore Valley.

When I was first getting into wine, I drank a bunch
of Concannon’s $10 Petite Sirahs and Cabernets. As I moved along in my wine
journeys, I didn’t think as much more about Livermore Valley. But this
west-east valley, which sits 35 inland from the San Francisco Bay, is home to some
4,000 acres of diverse grape varieties.
I recently tasted through a group of Livermore
Valley offerings and found some interesting bottles. Several of the wines
boasted new American oak signatures, more so than I find in tastings of other
California regions. But the richer wines (especially the Petite Sirah from
Vasco Urbano) seem able to absorb it well.
These wines were received as trade samples and
tasted sighted.
2013 McGrail Vineyards Sauvignon
Blanc
- California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore
Valley
SRP: $25
Pale lemon color. Clean citrus fruit mixed with
tropical notes of papaya and kiwi, zesty with hints of white pepper but not
really any green aromas. Almost full bodied, this is a creamy textured wine
with moderate acid. Kiwi, papaya, pineapple, add in some lemon and lime zest,
slight sense of chalk and seashell, hint of white pepper. Richly texture, but I
like the bright flavors, no mean green elements. Tangy and crisp. From
Ghielmetti Vineyard. (87 points)
2012 Concannon Vineyard Chardonnay
Conservancy - California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley
SRP: $16
Light gold color. Smells of honeybutter, yellow
apples, apricots, toasted nuts and vanilla. Very creamy on the palate, honeyed,
but the acid actually keeps it in check a little. The fruit is a good mix of
richer tropical elements with pears, apples and apricot. Toasted almonds,
vanilla and nougat elements from the American oak are woven in to the overall
package. Not really complex or deep, but it does what it does well. A Livermore
Valley staple, Concannon Chardonnay is a solid value and consistently a good
example of this creamy, nutty, rich style. Contains 5% Semillon. (85 points)
2012 Darcie Kent Vineyards Chardonnay
Demayo Vineyard - California,
San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley
SRP: $30
Rich golden color. Deep, rich aromatics, glazed
pears, golden apples, apricot jam, mixed in with white floral, honey, toasted
nuts and bread. Full bodied, a rich and chewy wine but some moderate acid. The
bruised yellow apple, apricot jam and baked pear fruit is drizzled with lime
juice and topped with toasted nuts and creamy oak. A big wine with a forward
approach, but shows some complexity and zesty, food-friendly elements, too. (87
points)
2012 Cuda Ridge Wines Malbec - California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley
SRP: $29
Light purple color. Red and black plums on the nose,
along with lots of sweet spices (cola, chicory, pepper, ginger, anise).
Easy-drinking, medium tannins, medium-low acid, the fruit is juicy and velvety,
the black cherries and plums go down smoothly. But this wine is all about the
spice and non-fruit elements of fire pit, black pepper, loamy soil and black
licorice. Juicy and fruity but maintains some vibrancy. Great summer grilling
accompaniment. Aged in 33% new American oak. (86 points)
2012 Darcie Kent Vineyards Zinfandel
Field Blend Zin Demayo Vineyard - California,
San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley
SRP: $30
Medium ruby color. Sweet and lively aromas, baked
plums, raspberry and strawberry jam, sweet violets, cinnamon toast, tart cherry
rhubarb pie. Chewy texture, velvety tannins, medium-low acid, the strawberry
and raspberry fruit tastes wild yet jammy, laced with notes of sweet cola,
birch beer, roasted chestnut, menthol and tobacco. Sweet baking spices and
earthy, leafy goodness lasts long on the finish. Chewy and rich but maintains
some freshness and interesting floral-earthy complexity. Zinfandel and Petite
Sirah. (87 points)
SRP: $65
Medium purple color. Juicy and rich aromas, plums,
black cherries, blueberry pie filling, mixed with notes of tobacco and bay
leaf, oregano, pepper and toasted oak. Full-bodied, firm tannins but fined
around the edges, moderate acid helps balance out the richness. Juicy black
cherries, dark currants, tart blueberries. Complex elements of smoke, tobacco,
oregano, sweet coffee, vanilla and dark chocolate. Could use at least three
years in the cellar, this is a dense yet contemplative wine. 68% Cabernet
Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 11% Petite Verdot, 5% Malbec, 3% Cabernet Franc. (88
points)
2012 Concannon Vineyard Cabernet
Sauvignon Mother Vine Reserve - California,
San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley
SRP: $40
Medium purple color. Dark and rich aromas, the
blackberry, blueberry and currant fruit is jammy but showing some tartness,
backed up by sweet cedar, loam and coffee. Dusty tannic structure, medium acid,
some more tart elements to the blackberry and currant fruit, jammy but balanced
and crunchy. Notes of vanilla, cola, dusty soil, clay, eucalyptus and ginger
snap. More structure and depth than the entry-level stuff, but still
approachable and fun. Aged 22 months in French oak. (87 points)
SRP: $42
Medium purple color. Deep waves of fruit (black
cherries, red and black currants, blueberries), the fruit is rich and velvety,
notes of sweet black licorice, eucalyptus and dark roasted coffee.
Bold and fruity, rich and chewy with plenty of
tannic structure, medium-low acid. Love the deep, velvety black and blue fruit.
Significant mocha, toast and cedar, but it doesn’t overwhelm the other elements
of eucalyptus, pepper and sweet pipe tobacco. Long, full, yet leaves something
to the imagination. 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, 5% Petite Verdot, 3%
Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec. Aged for 33 months in a mix of French, American
and Hungarian oak, 35% new. (89 points)
2011 Fenestra Petite Sirah Ghielmetti
Vineyards
- California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore
Valley
SRP: $28
Boisterous purple color. A really jammy nose, like
blackberries, strawberries and blueberries all thrown together, mixed in with
notes of sweet cola, root beer and an interesting savory glaze note, like sweet
and sour plus black pepper sauces. Full-bodied and bold, good tannic structure
but the edges are all rounded out, medium-low acid. Jammy blackberries and
black cherries, some tart blueberries mixed in, complex sweet and savory
elements battle it out, cola, vanilla, cherry pie and sweet mocha with black
pepper and barbecue sauce. Finishes sweet and chewy. Interesting non-fruit
flavor elements to accent the gobs of dark fruit. Aged 20 months in 44% new
American oak. (87 points)
2012 Vasco Urbano Petite Sirah
"Heine" Casa De Vinas "Long Row" - California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley
SRP: $48
Intensely dark purple color. Nose shows deep
blueberries, blackberries, boysenberry jam, a deep, sweet cola, violets and
potting soil… mocha, some savory barbecue glaze notes too. A big and burly wine
with solid, mouth-drying tannins, low acid and rich, jammy fruit. Blackberries,
boysenberries, cassis jam, but the fruit is laced with complex charcoal, cola,
toasted oak, vanilla, potting soil, coffee and black pepper notes. Despite its
weight and oomph, the wine has a lot to contemplate and unravel, and could show
more in the cellar. All Petite Sirah aged in 75% new American oak. (90 points)
2011 Steven Kent Petit Verdot
Small-Lot Offering Ghielmetti Vineyard - California,
San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley
SRP: $50
Deep purple color.
Deep, dark, yet full of life on the nose: black currants, blueberries, black
cherries, dark roast coffee, sweet clove, caramel and loamy soil. Full bodied
with a firm tannic structure, medium-low acid. Black currants, blackberries,
the fruit is rich and chewy. The wine is backed up by notes of smashed rocks,
black pepper, pencil lead, dark chocolate and dark roasted coffee, slight hint
of savory grilled steak. Deep, extracted, rich and toasty, this could use a few
years to unwind. Aged 20 months in mostly new French and American oak. (88
points)

Tasting Report: 2010 & 2009 California Cabernets
Ah, California Cabernet. I last wrote about California Cabernets in April, focusing specifically on some wines from Napa Valley. This report features a lot of Napa wines as well, including some real beauties.
Most of these wines — which were received as trade samples and tasted blind — come from the 2010 vintage, a trying year in many regions. Grapes struggled through a cold and rainy start to the season only to be hit with a heat wave in August, all of which gave many growers a reduced crop. However, these conditions also gave some of the 2010 Cabernets more pronounced acid and lower alcohol, qualities which many consumers (myself included) enjoy. It just goes to show that even in a tough year, vinegrowers and winemakers know how to make the best out of Mother Nature’s dole.
On to the wines…
2010 Concannon Cabernet Sauvignon Selected Vineyards - California, Central Coast
SRP: $10
Aromas of sweet cherries, red licorice and rose petals, a little bit of pepper. Medium-bodied and tangy acid, lots of bright cherry and raspberry with notes of caramelized sugar, red licorice and soft toast. A fun, easy-drinking style. (84 points)
2010 Justin Vineyards & Winery Isosceles - California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
SRP: $62
Smells like a fruit medley of blackberry, blueberry and currant, but also some coffee and cedar. This is a big wine, but it’s surprisingly smooth. The firm tannins, creamy oak and fresh berry fruit work well together. The currant and blueberry fruit is fresh and full, slathered with smoke, cedar, roasted coffee and vanilla. It’s toasty, but relatively well-integrated. Very forward, open and inviting, with a creamy and slightly herbal finish. Serious stuff. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 7% Merlot. (90 points)
2010 Hooker Rugby Club Cabernet Sauvignon Old Boys - California, Napa Valley
SRP: $32
A dark and juicy purple color. A strong nose of dark plums, blueberries, charcoal and ink. Medium-grain tannins on the palate, this is a plush and rich wine with lots of blueberries and blackberries. Sweet mocha and toast flavors match the fruit, but they don’t dominate. Medium acid keeps this from being overbearing, but it’s not a subtle wine. (87 points)
2010 Le Pich Cabernet Sauvignon - California, Napa Valley
SRP: $45
Dark purple color. The nose is kicking with fresh currants, black cherries, dried figs as well as tobacco and mocha. Medium-grain tannins and surprisingly fresh acid make this a balanced and easy-drinking cabernet. A juicy mix of sweet blackberries and gushing cherries leads to notes of tobacco and baking spices. Overall, this wine has a creamy mouthfeel, well-placed toast and hints of hazelnut. Impressive finish. Seems like a candidate for the cellar. (90 points)
2010 Purlieu Cabernet Sauvignon - California, Napa Valley
SRP: $80
A rich purple color. The nose is deep but also fresh, with currant, raspberries, charcoal and crème brulee. On the palate, firm tannins and fresh acid combine to form a rich mouthfeel. The currant and plum fruit tastes pure but maintains a tangy edge. Vanilla and some coconut shavings, but this wine also shows complex notes of pepper, incense and tobacco. Wow. Beautiful and delicious, but also a seriously concentrated wine that has a lot of potential for aging. (92 points)
2010 Hall Craig’s Cuvee - California, Napa Valley
SRP: $35
Bright ruby-purple color. Smells of fresh cherries, cranberries, vanilla and toast. Medium-grain tannins, a bit low on the acid. Flavors of sour cherry, red plums, some bell pepper and earth. The vanilla and toast is really quite high, and it obscures the fruit a bit. The alcohol (15.6%) is persistent and the wine has a mocha-toasty finish. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. (85 points)
2010 Hall Darwin - California, Napa Valley
SRP: $50
Highly aromatic, with lots of sweet cherries and raspberries, rose petals and vanilla. Firm tannins and medium acid make for a full but velvety wine. Sweet raspberry and black cherry fruit, dusted with pepper and olive. I generally have a good tolerance for oak, but I feel the oak overwhelms some of the subtle flavors. However, the acid really saves this wine, providing a sense of crispness throughout. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. (87 points)
2009 Franciscan Estate Magnificat - California, Napa Valley
SRP: $50
A bit compact on the nose, but it opens up nicely. Dark plum and black currant aromas, but it also smells like a forest: cedar, soil, leaves. Medium tannins meet refreshing acid on the palate. The fruit tends toward dark plums and dates, but there’s freshness to it all. Flavors of cedar, tobacco and charcoal mix in. A bit toasty, but all the other elements come together well, and the result is a silky-smooth wine. A full-spectrum Meritage blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 5% Petite Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec. (88 points)
2009 Buccella Cabernet Sauvignon - California, Napa Valley
SRP: $145
A deep, toasty nose, focused on currant and black cherries, mocha, caramel and cedar. Bold and full on the palate, as grippy tannins meet with medium acid. The black cherry and plum fruit tastes pure and rich, but not overdone. The secondary flavors remind me of black olive, loam and pepper, and they work very well in this context. Quite toasty (lots of cedar) but it has plenty of other elements to balance it out. The finish is really long, with chewing tobacco, pencil shavings and mineral notes. This wine opens up nicely, but there’s so much in here to unpack over the years. Tasted blind, my first impression was: “OK, this is legit stuff.” 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Franc aged 22 months in 80% new French oak. (93 points)
2010 Concannon Cabernet Sauvignon Conservancy - California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley
SRP: $15
Nose of red licorice, some sweet red cherries and strawberries, mild toast. Medium-bodied with tangy acid. Tart cherries and strawberries lead the way, also some mocha and toasty notes. A simple but pleasant wine. (84 points)
2009 Jordan Vineyard & Winery Cabernet Sauvignon - California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
SRP: $53
Smoky nose, full of blackberry and black currants, dusted with earth and charcoal. On the palate, firm tannins, medium acid and dense fruit. Lots of dark berries and fig flavors, matched with loam and charcoal and creamy-toasty oak. Ripe and dark, but full of elegance. The finish shows tobacco leaf and pepper. Delicious now, but this could age for four to five easily. (89 points)
2010 Gundlach Bundschu Mountain Cuvée - California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
SRP: $24
Lots of plums, blackberries and currants on the nose, sweet and a bit candied, almost raisined, some rose petals. Creamy textured but solid tannin structure. Plums, currants, the fruit tastes fresher and tangier than I was expecting from the nose. Lots of power here, with moderate toast, but the acid keeps it all fresh and balanced. Black licorice, espresso and some bell pepper. Burly, but there’s some freshness and complexity that make this wine really enjoyable, and it opens up a lot with time. A kitchen sink blend of 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 10% Zinfandel, 4% Syrah, and 3% each of Malbec and Petite Verdot. (89 points)

Tasting Report: Petite Sirah & Blends
Petite sirah is one of my go-to wines for this time of year, especially when I’m entertaining or hosting casual wine drinkers. Nerds and newbs alike love petite sirah’s chewy texture, the bold dark fruit, the earthy and peppery notes. It’s no wonder wine writers love talking about pairing petite sirah and summer grill-outs. Serve me a petite sirah with anything that bleeds and was cooked over fire, and odds are I’ll be happy.
All these petite sirahs were received as trade samples and tasted blind.
2010 Mettler Family Wines Petite Sirah - California, Central Valley, Lodi ($25)
Almost like paint on the nose, with these deep, brooding aromas of blackberry, plum and charcoal, along with notes of vanilla and toast. The tannins are firm but rounded, and the wine is really inky, like gobs of ink and crushed berries. The acid is a bit low for my palate, but the blackberry and plum fruit is beautifully concentrated and sweet. The charcoal note really comes into play on the palate, and the wine finishes with notes of coffee and caramel. A wine with no shame, but it’s got the depth and complexity to pull it off. This Petite Sirah includes 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, aged 21 months in French oak. (88 points)
A really exciting petite sirah with lots of unique characteristics. Lots of red and black cherries on the nose, with green coffee and a smell that reminds me of a greenhouse full of flowers. On the palate, chewy tannins provide structure for the saucy cherry and blackberry fruit. There’s a very distinct flavor of sweet teryaki marinade, and I get a real kick out of it. Earthy and peppery notes linger onto the finish. (89 points)
All these petite sirahs were received as trade samples and tasted blind.
2009 Concannon Vineyard Petite Sirah Conservancy - California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley ($15)
Gobs of blackberries on the nose, red licorice, purple Gushers candy, along with mocha and toasted coconut. Juicy and full of red and black berry fruit, this wine is jammy and thick. High alcohol is evident over the creamy-smooth tannins. Inky, but not much in the way of secondary flavors. (85 points)

2011 Concannon Vineyard Petite Sirah Selected Vineyards - California, Central Coast ($10)
Medium purple color. Aromas of plum cake, caramel and green peppercorns. The palate shows fine tannins and juicy raspberry and plum fruit. Creamy and jammy with a solid dose of oak. There’s bitterness to this wine, like the skins and pips of the berries or something, and the finish is short. For $10, you can’t really expect much more. (80 points)
